Letters, 1852, Chelsea to [C.J.K. von] Bunsen.

Als dated May 28, 1852 to von Bunsen, a theologian, scholar, and former Prussian ambassador to London, asking him whether he would be willing to assist in arranging the shipment of a parcel of books from Berlin to London. Carlyle comments on Mirabeau's "On the Prussian Monarchy" which von Bunsen had left him, "I had already gone through that somewhat blustery farrago, - which is mainly a huge pleading, à la Cobden, in favour of 'Free Trade', and, except Mauvillon's volume on the Prussian soldiery, taught me very little ..." He continues, "I fear there is no copy of Mauvillon (Père or Fils, -- upon Fk Wm I, and Ferdinand of Brunswick) to be had in this country; nor any life of Marechal Saxe, nor &c &c! Human stuport and Panizzism, here as elsewhere, is very strong!" Als dated July 5, 1852 to von Bunsen thanking him for his "great and effectual help abou the Books; they have arrived perfectly safe (a miracle of cheapness, as coming direct from the Antiquar)... The Ashburtons, I believe, are gone across this day, and as far on the route Rhinewards as Lord A's poor state of health may have permitted. ... They were to go direct towards Hamburg, by easy stages, and not to stay there longer than three weeks."
